Haweswater

Haweswater is an artificially extended reservoir formed from the much smaller original lake that was roughly half the size and occupying the Northern half of the current reservoir. The villages of Mardale and Measand were lost to the much higher water level, together with a church, an inn and several roads with bridges. The dam at Haweswater was constucted to allow the existing lake in the valley to fill up to a higher level to create the reservoir we see today. Dissapointingly the dam is not accessible to walk along, as is the case at other reservoirs.
