Errwood Hall (ruin)
Errwood Hall was built around 1840 for the Grimshawe family and although the hall was finally demolished in 1934 there is a private “vault” and small cemetary on the hill overlooking the old hall where members of the Grimshaw family and there servants are interred.
Many of the structural walls of the old hall at Errwood are retained together with upstanding door arches and the layout of the rooms within are easy to judge. There are also a few interesting secrets scattered around the main-building location - some now lost to memory. With local rumours of the wealth of the Grimshawe family still hidden in the cellars, an entrance was said to be down near the stream beside the ruin. There are probably tunnels below due to an old coal mine operating in the mid-1800s with its building remains on to the southern side of the small hill.
An excellent ruin to explore just a short walk from the Errwood Reservoir car park, with paths leading off up onto the higher hills, and lovely walks through the surrounding woodland and along the rocky streams.
