Grand Western Canal at Tiverton

The Grand Western Canal ran from Tiverton to Taunton in Devon, England. It was built to provide a route for barges carrying coal from the Somerset Coalfield to the port of Tiverton. The canal was opened in 1814 and was later extended to meet the Bristol Channel at Bridgwater.

The canal company went into decline in the mid-19th century and the canal was bought by the Bristol Corporation in 1892. The corporation closed the canal in 1904, although a section from Tiverton to Taunton was reopened as a navigation in 1929.

The Grand Western Canal is now mostly disused, although there are plans to reopen it as a leisure amenity.
